No Fiber? Fixed Wireless Can Still Deliver Real Broadband

For rural business sites the carriers won’t serve, engineered fixed wireless delivers real broadband. How it works and when it beats the alternatives.

On the Central Coast, it’s common for a business site — a packing house, a well pad, a shop on the edge of the valley — to sit just past the end of the carrier’s build-out map. The official options are cellular hotspots with data caps, satellite with its latency and weather sensitivity, or nothing. There’s a fourth option the carriers don’t advertise: engineered fixed wireless.

How fixed wireless works

Fixed wireless delivers internet over a radio link between your site and a point that does have good connectivity — a tower, a tall building, a hilltop relay. Unlike satellite, the signal travels a few miles rather than to orbit, so latency is comparable to wired service. Unlike cellular, the link is engineered and dedicated: aimed antennas, planned capacity, no sharing with every phone in the area.

A well-built link starts with engineering, not installation:

  • Desktop feasibility study. Terrain data and coverage modeling show whether a path exists before anyone rolls a truck. (We do this step free.)
  • Site survey. An on-site RF check confirms the path, because trees and buildings don’t always appear in elevation data.
  • Professional installation. Antennas mounted and aimed properly, cabling weatherproofed, equipment grounded — the difference between a link that runs for years and one that fails in the first storm.

When it’s the right answer

Fixed wireless is at its best when a site needs real, low-latency bandwidth and wired construction is impossible or absurdly priced. It powers everything from office connectivity to camera backhaul to industrial telemetry. And for sites without power at the relay point, solar-powered telecom extends the reach further — we’ve built links whose relay sites have no utility service at all.

It’s not magic: it needs a viable radio path, and a good provider will tell you plainly when one doesn’t exist rather than installing something that disappoints.

What to ask any provider

  1. Will you do a real path study before quoting?
  2. What happens to my speed when you add more subscribers?
  3. Who monitors the link, and how do I reach them when something’s wrong?
